This week's best deals: SNES Classic, 4K OLED TVs, UFC 3 and more

Image
Quite a week it's been. Sea of Thieves is finally out, we had yet another Nintendo Direct and, to top it all off, we've got a fancy new site that you're reading this on. Anyway, it's the weekend yet again, which means I'm back with another roundup of the week's best deals from the realms of games, tech, and more. As usual, we've got deals that'll work in the UK, deals that'll work in the US and some deals that will work in both the UK and US, as well as presumably many other places. Let's get started. In case you missed it, SteelSeries has partnered up with Jelly Deals to give away a big box of PC accessories worth over £380. To be in with a chance of winning, head to the link below and you can enter. Read more…

How Sea of Thieves' tech creates a unique gaming experience

Image
Sea of Thieves offers players a vibrant, cartoon world of stories big and small - but perhaps none of them are as significant as the tale of developer Rare itself. It's hard to believe that Kinect projects aside, it's been over nine years since we last saw a full game from the studio. Much has changed since then, with the studio's reliance on custom, per-game engines replaced by a shift towards Unreal Engine 4. But this game is a title quite unlike any other built on the Epic middleware - Sea of Thieves is beautiful and unique. From the moment you first begin your adventure it's clear that Rare's latest has a lot to offer visually. With its vast oceans, gorgeous cloud simulation and richly detailed islands, it's an attractive game and it feels like the pre-release media never quite captured its essence. Its open world is hand-built but its rendering is dictated by procedurals to a large extent, from the dynamic time of day transitions and the often dramatic we...

From Final Fantasy 12 to Uncharted 3: exploring gaming's Orientalist fantasies

Image
Over the last couple of months I've been falling in love all over again with Final Fantasy XII. I know I'm late to the Zodiac Age party, but I've been marvelling at how much this game has come into its own since its original release back in 2006. Certainly the remaster's smoothing-off of the original's (literal) rough edges helps, but I'm not the first to observe that it feels a bit like gaming has caught up with some of its ideas that weren't fully appreciated at the time like its distinctive automated battles. Or maybe it's just that I'm in a different place in my life, and FF12's peculiarly hands-off approach to monster hunting fits so much better into what a 30-something wants after a day at work than it did the long holidays of a student with time on his hands. Its idiosyncratic systems are what FF12 is best known for, but they're not the only thing that's distinctive about it. Let's talk about that setting and art direction. W...

PixelJunk Monsters is getting a sequel this May, and it's beautiful

Image
Q-Games has announced that a sequel to its beloved tower defence classic PixelJunk Monsters will arrive on PC, PS4, and Switch on May 25th, over a decade after the original's release. The first PixelJunk Monsters launched in 2007, and the PixelJunk series has gone from strength to strength since then, tackling all sorts of genres in games like PixelJunk Shooter and PixelJunk SideScroller. Q-Games even made a music visualiser with the recent PixelJunk 4am. Based on the announcement trailer though, PixelJunk Monsters 2 is an even bigger evolution for the series, particularly in terms of presentation. PixelJunk Monsters 2 is absolutely gorgeous, sporting a wonderfully vibrant, pseudo-handcrafted look. Read more…

System Shock remake still happening says Nightdive Studios, now due in 2020

Image
Nightdive Studios, the team behind the highly anticipated System Shock remaster, has offered further insight into where the project went wrong in the run-up to its recent development hiatus, and offered a speculative new release date as production resumes. In its original guise, Nightdive's System Shock was intended to be a remaster of Looking Glass Technologies' classic first-person sci-fi horror. However, the project quickly ballooned in scope, and was already being referred to as a "reboot" by the time its Kickstarter commenced in July 2016. In February this year, despite having raised $1,350,700 USD in backer money, Nightdive announced that it was putting the project on "hiatus" after letting "things get out of control". Now, having had time to reflect and regroup, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick and business development director Larry Kuperman have spoken to PC Gamer at this week's GDC , offering more details on what went wrong, and how it ...

Oxenfree developer reveals first trailer for its drunk-in-hell adventure Afterparty

Image
Oxenfree developer Night School Studio has offered the first proper look, via a new teaser trailer, at its upcoming boozy-night-in-hell adventure Afterparty. Afterparty, which was unveiled late last year, sees you taking on the roles of Milo and Lola, two recently deceased best friends who find themselves facing an eternity in Hell. It turns out, however, that there's a loophole: anyone that can outdrink Satan can earn re-entry to the land of the living. And so begins something close to a boozy road trip, a night of debauched pub crawling along the River Styx. Read more…

Kinect Represented Rare's Need to 'Do Something Different'

Image
Rare studio head Craig Duncan is proud of the work his team did for Kinect, and speaking to IGN, he highlighted the studio's desire to take on the unique challenges the technology presented, as well as the cool things Rare was able to accomplish with Kinect Sports. "Everything I've ever done, I've learned... and I think Kinect is the ultimate kind of version of that," Duncan said on the latest episode of our monthly interview show  IGN Unfiltered . He highlighted the challenge in developing games for a controller that uses an entirely different form of input and how that type of challenge appeals to Rare's sensibilities. Continue reading…

Lagiacrus Will Not be in Monster Hunter: World

Image
One of the Monster Hunter series' flagship monsters, the leviathan Lagiacrus, will not be making an appearance in Monster Hunter World's future content updates. During a postmortem at GDC,  Game Director Yuya Tokuda confirmed that that the formidable Lord of the Sea isn't planned to rear its head in the title, although it was present in the game's prototype. The prototype gameplay footage, worked on for a year and a half, was used to demonstrate the new environmental systems, proving that a hunter could survive confrontations without drawing their weapon, and relying on environmental features alone. It followed a hunter tracking an Anjanath through what looked like the Ancient Forest area from the finished game, and being pursued up a cliff. The confrontation ended with the pair being swept off the cliff in a cascading waterfall, with the Lagiacrus emerging from the water to finish off the Anjanath. Continue reading…

The Adventure Pals Arrives On All Platforms Next Month

Image
Developer Massive Monster has announced that its Kickstarter-funded platformer The Adventure Pals, published by Armor Games , will be arriving simultaneously on all platforms, coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on April 3. The Adventure Pals is a side-scrolling action-adventure platformer which features RPG elements and two-player local drop-in/drop-out co-operative play. The game definitely leans towards the whimsical - whilst playing through its 105 levels, players can expect to encounter "zombie pirate cats, post-apocalyptic dinosaurs and hot dogs that poop explosive mines", which is an image that may stay with you forever. Ubisoft Announces Mumbai, Odesa Studios

Image
Ubisoft is adding two new studios to its roster of development teams, with offices in Mumbai, India and Odesa, Ukraine being established. The Odesa studio will open in addition to the already established Kiev Ubisoft studio, managed by Kiev studio manager Adrian Serbanescu. The Odesa office joins the seven other studios working on Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon franchise. 10 people are currently working on the team, and Ubisoft plans to expand with 60 more members of the Odesa team within the next two years. The Mumbai team will report to the managing director of the Pune, India studio, Jean-Philippe Pieuchot. Rare Studio Head on Sea of Thieves Post-Launch Plans

Image
Rare has high hopes for Sea of Thieves, and according to studio head Craig Duncan, the development team intends to continue to support the game post-launch to make it "as big and successful as it can be." On the latest episode of our monthly interview show  IGN Unfiltered , Duncan said the studio "of course" has a roadmap and plan for the future of Sea of Thieves. "There's more stuff we want to add to Sea of Thieves," Duncan said, noting the team "definitely want to be reactive" to fixing any balancing issues and bugs that might arise. "Every single person I've talked to that launched a service-based game tells me, 'Hey, you think you know what you've gotta do—actually when you launch there'll be a load of different stuff,'" he explained, noting he's well aware there will probably be plenty of stuff the team wasn't aware of prior to release that they'll need to address after launch. A Way Out Review

Image
As my co-op partner and I approached the climax of A Way Out, the cinematic, 1970’s-set prison-break adventure from the studio headed by filmmaker-turned-game-developer Josef Fares, I thought it had run out of gas. I’d been hooked for the first five hours, which do a magnificent job of blending drama with action and emotion with lightheartedness. In that time we’d rarely done the same style of of gameplay twice, and I had gotten to know and understand Vincent, the more diplomatic and reserved of the two playable convicts in this mandatory two-player story. But here we were, knee-deep in a cliched sequence I’d seen a million times before in both games and movies. I thought A Way Out had run out of tricks. Continue reading…

Fortnite's Blitz Mode Update Makes Building Resources Less Abundant

Image
Fortnite's limited-time Blitz mode went live this week, and Epic has released an update to make building resources less plentiful. Resources gained from looting and farming were reduced with yesterday's hotfix. "Having tons of resources is a blast, and our goal with the mode was to make it easier to gain resources due to the storm moving in so much faster," Epic said in the announcement on Reddit . "We believe that our initial resource numbers were a bit too abundant, and are making this adjustment to ensure there is still some risk/reward when farming in Blitz." Continue reading…

Janina Reacts to Her Battlefront 2 "Iden" for the First Time - IGN Expert Mode

Image
As it turns out, getting to watch an actor see a video game character that's modeled after their likeness, mimicking the micro-expressions in their face, and speaking the lines they recorded, for the first time, is pretty incredible. Janina Gavankar is Star Wars Battlefront II's Iden Versio, and until I sat down with her late last year, she wasn't sure which of the hours upon hours of motion capture and voice recordings would make it into the final game. That didn't seem to matter, though, since it was obvious that Gavankar so passionately and wholly knows Iden as a character that every word that did make it into the game was layered in a whole lot of personal investment. Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered Review

Image
When Assassin's Creed: Rogue came out on Xbox 360 and PS3 back in November 2014, I thought it was an interesting installment in the series from a story perspective but found it frustratingly dated in other aspects, and ultimately awarded it a 6.8. Here's what I said back then: "Rogue has the most interesting story of any recent Assassin’s Creed game. It’s fascinated by its own history, and introduces a level of ambiguity which changes how we look at the formerly simple conflict between Assassins and Templars. So it's all the more disappointing there's so little to do while the story is being told; the upgrade economy's pointless and most of the tasks are quite trivial. Story aside, so much of Rogue feels redundant, repetitive, and ultimately in need of reinvention." Continue reading…
