Why Call of Duty: WW2 Had to Go Back to Move Forward

Image
I had the opportunity to sit down with Sledgehammer Games co-founder and former general manager Glen Schofield to talk about his journey with Call of Duty: WWII. It’s difficult for me to imagine that the frequency and consistency of an annualized franchise like Call of Duty (which is already moving right along to Black Ops 4) would leave any room for passion or a personal connection on the part of the developer. But as Glen conveyed during the interview below, the drama, tragedy, and historical nature of World War II has a way of evoking an emotional response. Call of Duty: WWII represents a return to the mechanical “boots on the ground” roots of the franchise with health pickups, a reliance on squadmates, and a distinct lack of exosuits. But equally important to Glen was telling a historically grounded and emotional story without sacrificing the scope and spectacle for which the franchise’s grandiose campaigns are known. So now I’ll leave you with the following video: please enjo...

Trump's Meeting With The Games Industry Was Never About Finding Solutions

Image
Yesterday’s meeting between President Donald Trump , game industry executives, and anti-game-violence crusaders was nothing more than theater. Trump couldn’t possibly have expected anything to come out of it, except the appearance that he and Congress are doing something about the ongoing epidemic of school shootings while actually doing nothing at all. But if it was theater, why wasn’t the meeting televised, as the gun control meeting held late last month was? It may have been out of fear of Trump overreaching again: had the President been seen calling for government censorship of Constitutionally protected speech a short time after he’d called for skipping due process and taking people’s guns, we’d have seen him advocating trampling the First and Fifth Amendments in consecutive meetings. That’s not a good look. Continue reading…

Enormous Indie MegaBooth Line-Up Announced for PAX East 2018

Image
If you've ever attended one of the PAX events, you know the Indie MegaBooth is the purest and rawest form of distilled PAX-ness on the floor. The 2018 Indie MegaBooth is no exception, with over 100 games from 93 developers shown off from April 5-8. The MegaBooth takes up over 7,000 square feet of the Boston Convention Center, with video games and tabletop games getting their moment in the sun. There's also the Indie MiniBooth to check out. Like the tabletop booth, the MiniBooth line-up rotates depending on which day you check it out. The 2017 PAX East Indie Megabooth had over 80 games, so this year's event is substantially larger. State of Decay 2 Is Bigger, Better, and More RPG-y

Image
My car was abandoned in the middle of the road somewhere behind me. I couldn’t go back for it even though I desperately wished I could. I had to bail out of it – while it was moving, mind you – because it was the dead of night and I didn’t see the Bloater standing in my path until he exploded on the front bumper, filling the cabin with noxious gas. I was left to limp up and around a mountain, as a straight-line path back to my community’s base just wasn’t possible. My health was critical. My stamina was exhausted because I hadn’t slept in two days and simply couldn’t run more than a few paces anymore. I figured my odds of surviving – and thus not losing valuable geocacher/masseuse Fulgencio Arellano permanently – were barely north of zero. Between my body, my mind, and my situation, I really was in a state of decay. Continue reading…

Image
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is the third highest selling game in Steam's history, says Valve's Gabe Newell. Newell briefly touched on the title during a press presentation about the new DOTA 2 card game, Artifact , yesterday. Talking about the investment Valve has made in hardware and technology, Newell said that there was a "big hole" left in the market after the release of DOTA 2 that PUBG stepped in to fill. "You can have a relatively new game like PUBG, and they can capitalise on all the other multiplayer games, and all of the technology, Continue reading…

The White House has published its 'violent video game' reel that President Trump shared at today's meeting with members of the video game industry and critics of the medium. The sizzle reel, shared on The White House's YouTube channel, features clips from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (predictably, its 'No Russian sequence), Wolfenstein, Dead by Daylight, Sniper Elite, and Fallout 4. AFL Clubs Recognise That Esports Are Sports - Why Hasn't Everyone?

Image
"This should not be an Olympic sport because it is not a sport," declared Shelly Horton on Channel 9's Weekend Today earlier this week. In the news ticker the title of the discussion said "Revenge of the Nerds?" in all caps. Peter Stefanovic put up a robust defense of competitive gaming, but it was moot. Shelly had a catchy way to dismiss the concept of esports as a sport. "You need a little bit of huffy puffy," she said. "The only thing moving are thumbs, that is not a sport." Should video games be an Olympic sport? Professional video gaming or "E-Sports" is already a $1.5 billion industry but it's predicted to grow by 50% in two years. Warhammer Vermintide 2 Review in Progress

Image
There are few things quite as satisfying as the feeling of popping a ratman’s head like a grape with a giant war hammer. Or cutting that head clean off with an ax, or possibly unloading a full revolver clip into it, or just burning the whole thing to a crisp. The truth is, just about every one of the multitude of ways Warhammer Vermintide 2 gives you and your co-op team to kill your enemies is punchy, powerful, and a whole lot of fun. I’ve been playing the pre-order beta of Vermintide 2 for the last week, as well as the closed beta before that, and I’m already enjoying it a lot - though I’m left wondering how long its randomized loot progression and relatively straightforward level design will keep me engaged. I’ve only had access to a total of six missions, so there’s still a whole lot I’ll be trying out in the full game for our final review, but here’s what I think of it so far. Continue reading…

Facebook adds video chat to its lightweight Messenger app

Image
As with Microsoft's Skype optimization just days earlier, there's a clear reason for Facebook to make video chat as widely available as possible: maximizing its audience. Nearly half of Android users using Google Play are running wholly obsolete versions of Android (Android 5 and earlier), and thus older phones. If Facebook wants more users to try video chat, it needs to loosen the requirements so that more people can give the feature a try. from Joystiq http://ift.tt/2FjUjdU via IFTTT
